Chapter 16

LILY

“You want me to dump you?” I can’t tear my attention from him. He’s a visual feast and my brain is misfiring. I only just managed to walk away from him this morning, and he’s back to torture me with his proximity. It’s too much too soon but my body doesn’t care.

My nipples are stiff peaks and the hussy between my legs is warming up for more attention. I quickly bury the part of me that’s waking up under landfill and plant a great big glaring red neon sign screaming “Achtung” into the mound.

Tristan runs his fingers through unruly blond curls. His hair is unbrushed, almost as though he leapt out of bed and didn’t bother combing it. His chiseled jaw is dusted with dark blond stubble. My thighs still burn a little from the grazes he left on my sensitive skin last night. I squeeze my legs together and fight the impulse to rub them. Or ask if he could please kiss the gravel rash on my thighs better.

He did spend an extraordinary amount of time between them.

The neon sign starts flashing, and little soldiers stomp around the pole.

He sits forward on the sofa. The sleeve of his white tee stretches around his bicep. The material at the front shows scrunch lines that are slowly fading with his body heat. “Publicly.”

It sounds . . . callous, but he’s dead serious. The idea is so preposterous I have to double check I heard him correctly. “You want me to dump you in front of an audience?”

He leans his elbows on his knees and spears me with a burning gaze. His eyes narrow and tension rims them. “Obviously. I’ll be devastated but because it’s your decision, you’ll be socially cleared and your reputation will remain intact.”

My heart skips because I’ve heard one thing from the several things he’s said. He’ll be devastated. The soldiers pull red flags from their pockets and wave them around because I don’t want that. I don’t want to cause him any pain, but I remember Mom’s business and why I originally agreed to an arrangement that has been stretched further than Reed Richards’ limbs.

I lick my lips because my mouth has gone dry. “And how long before I dump you?”

He shrugs and leans back. His relaxed posture disguises nothing. Tension thrums through him like a live wire. “That depends on how well we sell ourselves. The more we appear like a couple in love, the faster the sharks will disappear.”

“What will that entail?” If he asks me for another night with him, I’ll only say yes. I don’t have the fight in me to deny him, and the hole I’ve dug for myself will only get deeper.

“Touching. Kissing. You’ll have to be seen with me on a regular basis,” he says.

“How many times is a regular basis?” All I’m able to do is ask questions because my mind is supplying me with unhelpful X-rated images to describe the “touching” and “kissing” I want to do to him.
