“Whenever he heard that any of the young men were at an entertainment, he would come in quite unceremoniously with a fife (meta keratiou) and a procession [or band] of musicians (symphnias).”386

Symphnia in this sentence is interpreted mostly as “bagpipe.” This instrument, however, had already at least two sounding pipes; the addition of another wind instrument, the keration, to such an ensemble would therefore be highly improbable.387.
