Chapter Eleven

***Jake***

For a second, all Jake could do was stare at Marley and Stella shivering on the couch, their arms wrapped around each other. The look of shock on Marley’s face was mirrored by the look on Stella’s, and he knew that he had to do something, and fast. Kneeling on the floor between them, he said, “Hey, look at me.”

Marley’s eyes met his first, and then Stella’s joined hers. “I’m going to light the fire, and then I’ll make you some hot chocolate. Whatever happened in there is over; that thing is gone.”

“He’s right,” Marley said, taking a deep shuddering breath. “It’s gone; we got rid of it.”

Stella shook her head. “You did. I was too scared to move,” she said, a huge shiver overtaking her body.

Jake lit the fire, saw that it was burning brightly, then stepped into the kitchen and heated some milk and made hot chocolate with a little extra sugar. He could hear Marley talking to Stella, softly soothing her, and her words seemed to soothe him as well, the tension draining from his muscles.

When he brought the coco over to the couch and saw Stella so pale and small curled up in Marley’s arms, he wondered if he’d made a mistake coming back, if he’d been selfish. It had never occurred to him that there might be bad spirits here as well as good, but he should have known better; nothing was perfect, even Serendipity.

He handed each of them a steaming cup, then sat down in the rocking chair by the fireplace. “Drink that; it should help,” he ordered them.

A few minutes later, the sugar had done its work. Stella’s cheeks had started to pinken up, and Marley looked a little steadier. She took a deep breath and said, “I don’t know what that thing in there was.”

Jake’s heart fell. He’d been sure that she’d know what they were dealing with. “But you got rid of it,” he said.

“Yeah, you did something and all of a sudden, I could move again,” Stella said.

Marley nodded. “I put a protection spell on you,” she said.

“Is it going to come back?” Stella asked, fear in her voice.

“Not tonight,” Marley said, brushing the hair back from Stella’s face. “Would you like me to teach you the protection spell I used? Then you can use it every night.”

Stella nodded. “Would you?”

When Marley came out of Stella’s bedroom half an hour later, Jake was pacing back and forth in front of the fireplace, the cramped living room getting on his nerves for the first time. He wanted to shift and run through the mountains until his agitation dissolved and he could think clearly, but that wasn’t going to happen, so he settled for pacing.

He jumped on Marley as soon as she came through the door. “What did you mean when you said that thing wouldn’t be back tonight? Is it coming back?”

Marley took a deep breath. “I’m a little out of my league here. I’ve never seen anything like that before,” she said.
