Dinner at the Express Restaurant was as good, if not better, than I remembered. Though, this could’ve been because I was having dinner with Grace Bell. The sounds of other diners faded as Grace and I laughed and joked and spoke comfortably. Too soon, the waiter informed us that the restaurant was closing for the night. I could hardly believe how quickly the time had passed.

Grace and I left the Express Restaurant and I wasn’t ready for our night to end just yet. With a smile, I grabbed Grace’s hand and we returned to Center Street. The RiverSpring Carnival was beginning to wind down — the final performance of the evening would be taking place soon.

But, instead of turning towards the carnival, I led Grace back to our playground. The place was deserted — most of the children of Aston Falls were in bed, dreaming of cotton candy and ferris wheel rides.

“Push me?” Grace asked as she sat on one of the swings.

I remembered the words of one of Grace’s favorite movies. “As you wish.”

I gave her a tender kiss on the side of her neck and she moaned softly. Then, I placed my hands gently on her hips and gave her a little push. She giggled as she swung forward, kicking her legs out in front of her. I loved the sound of her laugh, the way it bubbled from her chest. I pushed her again and she swung a little higher. We fell into a comfortable rhythm — I’d push her forward and she’d kick her legs towards the sky.

It occurred to me that I could do this forever. Come to this playground with Grace, eat ice cream on the teeter totter, hear her laugh as I pushed her on the swing. Maybe, someday, I’d be pushing a little someone else on the swing — our child.

I jerked in surprise at the thought. Having kids had always seemed like such a distant, intangible concept, I’d barely considered it at all. Even with Whitney, we seemed to have an unspoken agreement that we wouldn’t have kids. Wouldn’t even discuss it.

But the thought of having a child with Grace? I was filled with the glow of warmth and possibility.

“How did this become our spot again?” Grace’s question pulled me from my happy daydream. She squealed as I swung her high.

“Don’t you remember?” I pushed her again. “It was all because of Austin.”

“That’s right.” I could hear the smile in Grace’s voice. “He was supposed to meet us here.”

“And then didn’t because his girlfriend of the day had some sort of emergency.”

“Not that he bothered telling us that.” Grace shook her head. “He just never showed up.”

I chuckled, thinking back to that day. I’d only known Austin and Grace a few months then. My crush on Grace was already pretty strong, so when Austin didn’t come to the playground as promised, I took the opportunity to get to know Grace better.

“It was spring,” Grace said dreamily. “I remember because you picked a dandelion and put it in my hair.
