“Scoot over?”

I looked up in surprise. “Excuse me?”

Christian raised his eyebrows, his dark eyes giving nothing away. He nodded at the space on the bench seat next to me. “Mind if I sit?”

I looked around the empty train car and wrapped my jacket tight around me in an effort to ward off the cool air. The Express was deserted—Christian and I were the only passengers on this journey back to Aston Falls from Bozeman. “There are a ton of seats open for you and your fancy jeans.”

He smirked, eyes twinkling. “Maybe these fancy jeans want to sit next to you.”

I blinked, taken aback by his flirty response. But I moved over, made space for him.

His warm, firm side pressed against mine as he sat. His masculine smell of cedar and spice threatened to unleash the gang of butterflies that were perched in my stomach.

Why were they there anyway? Probably just some lingering side effect from what happened in the stable.

It had been months since I’d been kissed.

Not that I wanted Christian to change that.

I’d spent the entire train ride to Bozeman pretending I was asleep. I didn’t want to face him, to talk about that moment. And it seemed like Christian was the type to want to talk about it. I thought most men weren’t good at communication? Christian was showing himself to be the opposite.

By the time we arrived in Bozeman, I’d come to one conclusion—I didn’t actually want to kiss Christian West. The moment when I almost leaned in? It was all rooted in my missing Ted and grieving the end of my engagement. It was the only explanation because there was no way I’d ever feel Christian’s lips on mine.

The guy was still the enemy. Sure, he wasn’t exactly who I assumed he was, but that didn’t mean he was a good man. He’d literally made his career on breakup songs. There was no way that mine was joining his list. Especially seeing as my split from Ted was so, so fresh.

I shifted slightly, trying to move away from him and his bizarre gravitational pull. But it was a small seat, barely big enough for the two of us.

For the millionth time in my life, I cursed my curves. If only I was slight and willowy, like Grace, or petite, like Ella. I’d never felt completely comfortable with my body, no matter how confident I tried to act.

“Tight fit.” Christian chuckled.

“Hence why I told you to sit somewhere else.”

“Hence? You’re starting to sound like Ella.”

I put on a thick accent. “Just because I grew up on a farm doesn’t mean I don’t know nothing about proper English.”

Christian suddenly went serious, eyes locked on mine. “I didn’t mean it like that. You’re very well-spoken, JJ.”

His compliment took me off guard and I crossed my arms. I felt off-kilter, like Christian was beckoning me to meet him in the no man’s land between our battle zones and I had no idea whether I should put down my weapons or look out for traps.
