HIDE KAWANISHI

Unlike Yamaguchi, a reluctant exile from the capital, Hide Kawanishi (born 1894) is deeply rooted in his home city, the great port of Kobe. Tall, slender, with a sharply molded face and aristocratically thin nose and lips, he is pleasantly proud of being the tenth generation to live on the same plot of land in the center of the city, proud of his hereditary name of Zen'emon VII, proud of his well-to-do merchant ancestors. The latter were traders who specialized in the manufacture of sake, mirin (a sweet sake used for flavoring), and shochu (a cheaper and more powerful concoction distilled from sake dregs or. more often today, sweet potatoes). These products were transported to Tokyo in the family's own fleet of ships, whose captains took the money realized there and sailed to the northern island of Hokkaido, where they loaded up with special varieties of fish and seaweed for sale back in Kobe, thus completing a profitable round trip.
