Roasted CHESTNUTS

Make a statement with this chunky triangular granny shawl. Mix and match your favourite multi-coloured yarn with toning solid shades, then finish with a decorative picot border for a real wow factor.

MATERIALS

• Cascade 220 (100% Peruvian highland wool; 200m/220yds per 100g/3½oz skein) aran-weight yarn

1 x 100g (3½oz) skein in shade 8311 Mineral Blue (A)

1 x 100g (3½oz) skein in shade 9610 Azalea (C)

• Cascade Cherub Aran (55% nylon, 45% acrylic; 220m/240yds per 100g/3½oz ball) aran-weight yarn

3 x 100g (3½oz) balls in shade 518 Roasted Chilis (B)

• 5mm (US H/8) crochet hook

• Locking stitch marker

• Tapestry needle

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

101.5cm (40in) deep x 167.5cm (66in) wide

TENSION

26tr and 6 rows to measure 10cm (4in)

Picot: Work 2ch and sl st in first ch.

FOR THE SHAWL

Foundation: Using yarn A and 5mm (US H/8) hook, make a magic ring. Work 1ch 3dc into ring. Draw up tightly to conceal the hole and create a small half-moon shape with 3 sts. Turn and continue in rows as follows:

Row 1: 3ch (counts as 1tr throughout), 2tr in first st, 2ch, miss 1 st, 3tr in last st, turn.

Row 2: Change to yarn B, 3ch, 2tr in first st, 1ch, [3tr, 2ch, 3tr] in ch-sp (centre line made), 1ch, 3tr in third ch of 3ch, turn.

Row 3: 3ch, 2tr in first st, 1ch, 3tr in first ch-sp, 1ch, [3tr, 2ch, 3tr] in centre line 2ch-sp, 1ch, 3tr in next ch-sp, 1ch, 3tr in third ch of 3ch, turn.

Row 4: 3ch, 2tr in first st, *1ch, 3tr in first ch-sp; rep from * once more, 1ch, [3tr, 2ch, 3tr] in centre line 2ch-sp, **1ch, 3tr in next ch-sp; rep from ** once more, 1ch, 3tr in third ch of 3ch, turn.
