Now all that was left for them to do was to take a step of faith and accept into their hearts the God who had been with them all along. This was something that I could have led them through myself, but I thought it would be good to have a local pastor participate in the meeting by videoconference. I had been privileged to help them to trust in God and to get through those difficult days with faith and hope, but I needed to be sure that someone would continue the task after we had left the mine. I was thinking of their spiritual growth and ongoing need for discipleship. So I called on a pastor from Copiapó — the nearest city, the one in which most of the men lived. He would be able to follow up with the men after we were on the outside.

On a Sunday, during the noonday prayer meeting, the pastor said a few words, and we sang some praise songs. Then he offered a prayer that included the call to salvation. Twenty-two of the thirty-three miners trapped in the depths of the mine made a personal commitment to the Lord and said, “Yes, I accept Christ.” I glorify God for the life of this servant who served as Christ’s representative when Christ received my coworkers and wrote their names in the Book of Life.

Today I can affirm that during those days inside the mine, while trapped by those huge boulders 2,300 feet underground, the most glorious moment that I experienced was when twenty-two men accepted Christ as their personal Savior. My heart’s cry is that everyone would come to accept the Lord without waiting for a time until hardships and difficulties come. We do not need to be 2,300 feet under the earth and trapped for sixty-nine days to experience God. But sometimes we are so hard-headed that only when we are facing difficult circumstances will we look toward heaven and find our true salvation.
