Chapter Nine

“Well, that was interesting.” Lisa plonked herself on a chair at the table in her kitchen. She scarcely blinked when Henry pulled on a pair of faded jeans to screen his nakedness.

“What kind of man wears a red ribbon around his dick?” Henry demanded. “I don’t know whether to scrub my eyeballs or snigger.”

For a long instant, they stared at each other, then Lisa broke out laughing. “I wish I’d had a camera.”

“I hope they paid him well. What does the card say?”

“Should I use gloves?”

Henry handed her the pair he’d used. “Might as well.”

Lisa donned them and opened the envelope. Several photos fell from the card inside. She gasped. “He has been following me. I’ve sensed him but never caught him or saw a thing out of place. That’s me at the supermarket. And at the office supplies shop. Filling up my car with petrol.” Then there was the other photos of her running with Sam, of her in the garden with Henry and in the driveway with Gerard. Some of the photos showed her laughing with the men, their arms wrapped around her. She and Sam kissing.

“Lay the photos out on the table,” Henry ordered.

She did as he instructed, and they stared at them. In each of the photos where she appeared with Sam, Henry or Gerard, someone had scrubbed out their faces with a red marker pen.

“None of them are taken at Sam’s farm. They’re all around your section or in the city.”

“I’ll ring the police and let them know of the morning’s activities, get those to them,” Henry said. “I think you should stay with Sam.”

She nodded, a sick sensation settling in her gut. “Why? What have I done to this person? Sam might ring or text or send me flowers, but he’d never send a stripper. He’d be more likely to—”

Henry held up his right hand in a stop signal. “I don’t want to hear that one of my best friends wears a ribbon around his dick.”

The sound of a key sounded in the door, and they both stiffened.

“Wait here. I’ll make sure it’s Gerard.”

Lisa didn’t even bother arguing, which told her the morning’s events had shaken her more than she’d admitted.

“Hey, what’s with the gun?” Gerard asked.

“A precaution. We’ve had a busy morning,” she heard Henry answer.

“You all right, Lisa?” Gerard burst into the kitchen, his expression fierce. “Do you want us to ring Sam?”

“No. I’ll finish my work here and go out later this afternoon as planned.”

“Crap, he’s escalating.” Gerard dropped into the chair opposite her and scanned the photos.

“You missed the stripper,” she said.

“He wore a red bow around his dick,” Henry added with a chortle.

“You’re shittin’ me,” Gerard said.

Lisa shook her head. “You ask Mrs. Humphries. She might have missed the bow, but she saw the rest from her front door.

The doorbell peeled.

“I’ll go,” Gerard said.

He returned minutes later with Mrs. Humphries and her terrier. Geoffrey growled at Gerard, did his usual teeth-snapping at Lisa and circled them both to sidle up to Henry.
