Some final reflections and implications

Informal, experiential approaches to learning through play provide a space for imaginative play and a foundation for later faculties of thinking. Rather than the child receiving ‘training’ to accomplish ‘goals’, capacities of mind may develop that may later be applied to many different life situations. The Steiner kindergarten is a dependable yet flexible environment consisting of a simple, beautiful and orderly physical setting in which steady, meaningful adult work activity takes place. The Steiner kindergarten teacher aims to provide children with the mental and the physical space to exercise both their bodies and their powers of imagination, and with the time to engage in authentic, living activity, free from hurry and prescribed educational targets. Karen explained that it provides for the children:

a very clear palette, simple unformed materials that they can use because it is like an act of will to reach down inside themselves and find that inner picture and turn it into something.
