Leave the dead to bury the dead.

The saying is striking, enigmatic and evocative. There is a way of life that amounts to living in the land of the dead. 12 It invites reflection: who or what is being called dead? And what would it mean to leave the land of the dead?

The next saying is also fresh in its content:

You strain out a gnat and swallow a camel. 13

The image is humorous, but with a bite to it as well. Apparently directed at advocates of the purity system, it invites hearers to see a concern with purity as analogous to the foolishness of straining out something small while swallowing something huge. The fact that the camel was an impure animal adds to the irony.

Sometimes the content expresses something that everybody would accept as true, but invites an application of that commonplace truth to some situation at hand:
