Chapter 21

Gideon

Alesia was quicker and cleverer than I expected. She had picked up fighting quickly and, like my sister, she was not at all honorable. The men in the honor guard did not like to admit it but other than meat shields they were useless to my sister. She was far more skilled than they and when I wanted a challenge, I fought her.

She did not enjoy fighting; it was something she learned to prove she could. And her stubbornness kept her from quitting once she was satisfied. Her dirty fighting was why I trained with her. If someone came to kill me, I highly doubted they would be kind enough to wait for me to grab my sword. I appreciated her help, though I was not a fan of her attacking me in the middle of the night after a hard day. She had turned me paranoid.

Alesia had the same fire in her. The same stubbornness. But she was more cautious than Kamra was. Kamra was aggressive, forever on the offensive ground during battle. Defensive positions did not happen, it did not get to that part. Alesia was human and could not heal from the same things Kamra could, so she had to be more careful. Eventually, as she gained experience, she would learn to take what my sister taught her, add in her limitations, and make something new that worked for her. But for now, she was half in and half out.

So, I beat her. Not that she did not land blows or win rounds, but she was not nearly as experienced as me…also she was human. That in no way meant I was not impressed with her progress. She was picking it up like she had horse riding. She was a fast learner as well as intelligent. One with no limits to learning capabilities. She would be a formidable opponent in anything she took to.

After practice Kamra came over to watch us finish up our match and distracted me allowing Alesia to knock my chin something hard. It would be healed in less than an hour, didn’t mean it would not hurt until then.

“Should we bathe or ride Alesia?”

“Let’s ride. The horses don’t get much exercise. I have a feeling they like side saddle riding as much as I do. They always look so bored when they walk around with the girls on them. That’s why I now alternate who I ride. The others look on in envy and I feel bad they are not being properly exercised because the girls here cannot imagine wearing pants.”

Kamra laughed at Alesia’s facial expression more than her words. She seemed to have an easy friendship going on with Alesia. It was rare she took to anyone. She was not a loner but she had high standards and not many made the list. But I could hear her thoughts, she was doing nothing to shield herself from me even though she could, and she genuinely liked Alesia. That made two of us.
