Further examples?

These sites have enough in common to encourage researchers to look for further examples in regions where the water’s edge has been lost or where less evidence survives. One approach builds on the observations already made here and in Chapter Three and looks for exceptional collections of artefacts close to other estuaries. Could they identify areas of particular significance beside the original shoreline? The concentration of finds on the mainland opposite Walney Island provides an excellent example. So do the exotic artefacts distributed around Hengistbury Head and Christchurch Harbour. Where this happens it is worth considering the form of the prehistoric coast. Again some information can be obtained from changing sea levels. These methods identify additional candidates: Merthyr Mawr and its surroundings in South Wales; the Willingdon Levels in East Sussex; and a pair of sites, at Soham and Ramsey, recorded by field survey in the East Anglian Fens. In the area of isostatic uplift the argument extends to three bays or estuaries along the southern shore of the Firth of Forth.
