CHAPTER IX.

Pilgrimages in Honour of St. Joseph.

FROM the earliest ages of the Church, numerous sanctuaries have been dedicated to the Blessed Virgin; many of these sanctuaries, favoured by heaven, have become celebrated pilgrimages. It was the same, though in a lesser degree, with the tombs in which repose the ashes of saints, especially of martyrs, so great graces were granted through their intercession, which kept up the confidence of the faithful.

St. Joseph, considering his virtues, and the high dignity to which he was exalted, had doubtless the greatest claims to the homage of the people; but, as some theologians say, his body having left the tomb, in perfect life, at the moment of our Lord's resurrection, no trace remained of him here below to be a remembrance of him, or an object of veneration. Divine Providence, no doubt, had its own designs in permiting this momentary forgetfulness;

The glory of St. Joseph, of late years especially, is always increasing, far from suffering, from the brilliancy of that of the Sacred Heart and Immaculate Conception. The devotion to him appears to derive fresh lustre from it. To judge even by the rapid progress which the devotion to this great saint is making, and by the favours granted to those who invoke him, it seems to be the will of heaven that we should unite in our love and veneration the three august personages who were united by it on earth, to be the most perfect instruments of its glory and our sanctification.
