Canterbury Cathedral, located in England, was the inspiration for this set.

Wood Notes

The pattern is shown here in walnut and African mahogany. Both of these woods have been discussed in earlier designs.

Cutting Notes

Every piece, with the exception of the knight, features inside cuts. This pattern takes some time to cut. Cutting the king and queen demands patience and care to make sure that the blade is kept straight and not pushed to one side accidentally. Side pressure can cause problems with the inside cuts and the stair-step pattern of the queen. When cutting the outside cut of the pawn, do the side with the peak in the roofline first. Then, when it is turned over, do not cut the level line across the roof. It is already cut, and by cutting it again, you can actually mar the piece.
