The old and dirty nets have been reproduced on this crofter’s cottage. Tissue paper proved to be a good choice to replicate them.
CHAPTER FOUR
FINAL PAINTING, WEATHERING AND FINISHING
The final stage to finish your model will be the painting, weathering and adding those last little touches. This stage will require as much effort and attention to detail as any other stage, if not more. After all, the painting and finish of the model will be the first thing that will be seen. It does not matter how well the model has been built, if the painting and finish are shoddy it will not look the part. By observing the real thing and taking your time you should be able to replicate the colours and textures on your miniature versions as close as possible.
Enamels, watercolours and acrylics can all be used to paint models, but I have found that the best results overall come from using artist’s oil paints. They mix well to give all those shades required, at the same time giving a textured finish when used nearly dry. I work from a range of about fifteen colours from the tube (see Appendix: Colour Reference Guide for suggestions of where and how to apply them). Most of the colours that you will use for the building materials will need to be mixed together on a palette. You don’t need to buy something special; the plastic lids of old ice cream tubs work well if you have these to hand. Squeeze out a little paint from each of the tubes on to the palette, then mix to the desired tones from these colours. Putting out more white is recommended as this will be used all the time to lighten the shades.
