STEPS

1. Use painter’s tape to mask off the metal bases on the bottom of the table legs so they don’t get paint on them.

2. Sand the legs lightly with the 80- to 120-grit sandpaper. This is for smoothing and removing small imperfections.

3. Next sand with a 360- to 600-grit sandpaper. This is used to finish the surface smoothly.

4. Wipe down wood legs with a damp cloth to remove any debris.

5. Put on the gloves, and apply the stain with the sponge brush. Use just enough to saturate the wood (one dip with the tip of the sponge brush should suffice) and avoid dripping, as drips will appear in the stain once it’s dried. Go with the grain to prevent streaks.

6. Peel off the painter’s tape from the metal bases and wipe off any stain that may have seeped through the tape with a damp cloth.

7. Let the stain dry for 6 to 8 hours (stand the tops of the legs on cardboard on the floor and lean the bottoms against a wall). Throw out your sponge brush.

8. Flip the tabletop upside down.
