ALL I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT FILMMAKING I LEARNED FROM THE TOXIC AVENGER, QUITE LITERALLY
Doug Sakmann
Doug Sakmann is Head of Production for Troma Entertainment, a title that carries about as much weight and status in Hollywood as Hall Monitor or Fish Gutter. Here, Doug describes his experiences as Troma’s fall guy.
I first joined the Troma team as an actor-person on Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger Part IV. My role was that of a “Special Student.” In other words, I play a retard in the opening scene. Lloyd told us that even though we only had small roles, we should still put some thinking into it and bring what we could to our characters. So as my fellow students and I sat in the classroom waiting for the shot, I saved all the spit in my mouth until I had a mouthful. When Lloyd called action, I spit and slobbered all over myself and the actor-persons around me. When the shot was done, Lloyd said, “Whose idea was the Bromo Seltzer? That’s brilliant!” With a mouth full of spit, I said it was my own saliva. The rest of the cast and crew thought it was disgusting, but Lloyd thought it was genius. To this day, I think Lloyd hired me because he was impressed by my ability to store spit in my mouth.
I had such a great experience getting involved with all aspects of production of the classroom scene, that I decided I would put all my free time into helping out with the film. I worked as much as I could on the rest of the month-long shoot, putting my heart and soul into everything I did, be it foaming at the mouth or pouring blood over naked bodies at the Playboy Mansion. I learned all kinds of things, just by experiencing them firsthand. Lloyd took notice of this and when the film wrapped, he gave me credit as “Associate Producer” of Citizen Toxie, and offered me a job. Here I was, 19 years old, fresh out of high school with no formal film training, and he was offering me a major position in his nearly thirty-year-old film company. Needless to say, I took the job and here I am almost three years later, head of production for Troma.
Besides all the basic duties associated with this title (like unclogging the toilet, a job that will be much easier once Lloyd and Michael Herz buy me that plunger they’ve been promising), I have headed the Troma Team at Cannes and TromaDance for the past three years now, as well as co-produced and co-directed Troma’s Edge TV for Channel 4 in the UK (I’ve also banged a lot of hot Tromettes to boot). Being in Tromaville for three years now, I have gained so much invaluable experience with all aspects of the filmmaking business (and with women). Thanks to Lloyd and Michael, I understand how the industry actually works (again, I have also learned how women work. At least more than I knew before).
