AIRBRUSHING POWDERS
DESIGNED TO CREATE THE ILLUSION OF A SMOOTH, CLEAR COMPLEXION WITHOUT FULL COVERAGE, THESE lightweight powders are fantastic for casual daily wear. The idea for them came to me late one night as I was thinking about sericite mica. Sericite mica is a really neat ingredient. It’s powdered aluminum potassium silicate, a naturally occurring mica. It’s often used as a filler in cosmetics, and it also helps improve slip and adhesion. The property I was excited about that late night, though, was its ability to scatter and diffuse light, creating a bit of a blur effect around the skin. This optical illusion helps to disguise imperfections, reducing the appearance of fine lines and pores without covering them.
All this got me to thinking: What would a powder that was almost entirely sericite mica do? I pulled out my cosmetics coffee grinder and set to work. The resulting powder triggered a gleeful squee fit. When applied, it gives an airbrushed look while still letting freckles and other bits of you shine through. I find it’s perfect for everyday wear, especially if you combine it with a bit of concealer (or well-behaved skin).
Because these airbrushing powders are just a blend of your Essential Mineral Makeup and sericite mica, you can easily make it in a variety of different strengths. More makeup and less mica makes for a higher-coverage powder; the more mica you use, the less coverage you’ll get. The blends that use more sericite mica than mineral makeup include some extra oil to keep the powder creamy and prevent it from poufing out too much when you use it.
Once you’re familiar with these blends, you can feel free to tweak the amounts of Essential Mineral Makeup and sericite mica based on how you like your airbrushing powder.
