Sawflies

Codling moth. Adult and larva in apple.

Resembling and related to bees, but not at all helpful is the sawfly. The name comes from the egg-laying apparatus of the female, who cuts pockets in plant tissue to lay her eggs. The primary damage comes from larvae, which feed on the leaves and resemble caterpillars. In the orchard, European sawflies are most harmful on cherry and pear trees, but many species also attack roses, currants, various shade trees, and conifers like pines and spruces. Because they are chewing insects, sawflies can be controlled with botanical sprays or Bt.
