Chapter 17

The question of what will happen if and when we sort out this whole mess with Roxie keeps trying to intrude in my thoughts all through the next week.

But I don’t have a good answer, so instead, I focus all of my attention on the other pressing question we’re facing:

What the hell does this prophecy about Roxie foretell?

I’m distracted in class, and if it wasn’t for the guys continuing to help me cheat, there’s no way I’d be keeping my grades up where they should be. I feel like I shouldn’t be here, as much as I want to throw myself into my studies—I should be out there, chasing down Solomon, making him talk and reveal what he knows.

We went back and checked, braced for another fight, but he hasn’t returned to his apartment at the homeless camp. Smart guy. And we couldn’t find any actual notes about Roxie in his apartment, or notes on any prophecy at all, for that matter. I suppose he thinks it’s smarter to keep it all in his head so other people can’t find out what he knows. And it’s working. He’s sure stumped us anyway.

We have to figure out a way to track him down or get that information from someone else. Roxie is still in my world, and there’ve been no forced swaps, so whoever is after her still hasn’t gotten to her and dragged her back here yet. But I feel like this whole situation is a time bomb ticking down, and I don’t even know how much time is left on the counter.

On Thursday morning, I walk into Professor Barnhouse’s class hoping she won’t call on me because there’s no way my head is in the game right now—only to find the room empty.

Uh, what?

“Roxie!”

I turn to see Cross striding down the hall toward me, his gait long and relaxed. When he catches the look on my face, he smirks. “We thought you might’ve forgotten. C’mon, there’s a school-wide assembly. Some guest keynote speaker or something.”

Oh, right. Now that he mentions it, I remember writing that down in one of my notebooks on Monday. More than one professor gave us a reminder about this, but it still completely slipped my mind.

“Thanks,” I mutter breathlessly, shaking my head as I step forward to join him.

“No problem, cupcake.” He grins at me, although a flicker of worry lights his eyes. “You’ve had a few other things on your mind lately.”

The two of us hurry across the quiet campus toward the auditorium and step inside.

I’ve never been in here before, actually. It’s huge and very impressive, imposing almost, with columns embedded in the walls and the ceiling painted with some kind of pastoral scene featuring satyrs and nymphs. It’s almost like a fancy theatre instead of just the place where we all go to listen to some lecture from the dean.

We shuffle into place, joining the other two men in a row near the front as the lights dim. I lean toward Theo, who’s sitting on my other side.
