Unable to marry his first love for political reasons, Louis was forced into marriage with the lumpish and obese Maria-Thérèse of Austria. Louis managed to overcome his physical loathing of his wife and spent at least part of every night in her bed. The poor woman found herself a mere baby-making machine. After suffering from seven pregnancies and an over-strained heart, she was killed by zealous court physicians, who accidentally bled her to death.

Louis married his second wife, the plain and practical Madame de Maintenon, in secret. Madame de Maintenon learned to refuse Louis’s sexual demands on occasion, which kept him interested in her for the entirety of their marriage. In fact, on reaching the age of seventy-five, Madame was heard to complain that the twice daily demands of her seventy-year-old husband were becoming rather tiring.

His mistresses

Louis was in the habit of keeping at least four mistresses on the go at any one time. He was not in the least bit choosy, and many a servant girl had to avoid getting too close, lest she be whisked off to his bedchamber. Any passing female would do. Louis fathered a vast amount of illegitimate children, all of whom put a severe strain on the French economy, and all of whom he allowed to marry into the royal family and thereby dilute the bloodline.

Age-old exploits

Louis had already contracted gonorrhea at the age of seventeen, so it was no surprise that later on in life he should suffer from syphilis. Not that the disease slowed him down in any sense; on the contrary, his sexual exploits became his only pleasure in life, and it was a gangrenous leg which finally killed him aged seventy-six.
