We managed to survive a few more days with the occasional stolen moment in the hallway here and there, and one long, hot make-out session in the laundry room before we’d been interrupted by a crewmember looking for Reagan. She had to go over two different scenes and make the executive decision on what made the final cut.

It hadn’t been that bad, and every phony axe ceremony left us one girl closer to being together at last. We were down to the wire now, just a few girls left and less than a handful of days to suffer through before my head fucking exploded without Reagan in my arms.

Melanie sent Addison, her PA, to wake me first thing in the morning. I had a breakfast date with one of the girls, followed by a romantic horseback ride through the forest.

I was sure it would play well on TV and make all the housewives swoon and go damp in their panties for a big, burly romantic like me, but it was all bullshit.

How was I supposed to make small talk with a girl I had no interest in while my head was full of Reagan?

I smiled at the short brunette, Mickey, when we got into the Jeep they’d given us. I didn’t see Reagan with the crew and hoped she’d stay away for a while. It was so hard to fake it when her eyes were burning into me.

“Oh my god, I’m so excited about this,” Mickey said, giggling as she slipped her seatbelt on.

“Me too, I feel like we haven’t had enough time to really get to know each other,” I told her and started the car. I drove, knowing the cameras mounted on the dashboard were capturing every moment, and faked it like I’d never faked it before.

Mickey turned out to be genuinely sweet. She was a country girl and had actually been on a horse, packed firewood, and gutted her own fish before. In no time at all, the conversation started flowing, and we laughed at each other’s stupid jokes like we’d been friends for years.

At the ranch with my neighbour Dave McCullough and his wife Noreen, we had breakfast outside at a big table. Dave and Noreen had really put on a good spread for us, so at Melanie’s insistence, I fed Mickey strawberries dipped in whipped cream and let her slip her finger into my mouth to lick off melted chocolate.

I felt dirty, like I was cheating on Reagan, but Melanie was a constant task driver and wouldn’t let me slip. She helped me focus on making this believable.

The horseback ride was short—we were surrounded by crew and cameras and only needed enough footage to look like we’d spent hours on the horses in the sunshine.

Melanie finished up the shoot with us on a blanket, the horses tied behind us, kissing and whispering to each other all the sweet things the viewers would want to hear.

On the way back, I was silent, and I was hunched over as I rode in the back seat.
