Masturbation

Masturbation (noun): stimulation of the genital organs to a climax of excitement by contact (as manual) exclusive of sexual intercourse (verb: to masturbate).

This definition was taken from the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, and its limited scope causes me to reconsider how this particular definition ignores masturbation as non-genital stimulation. For example, running your fingers through your hair or absentmindedly stroking your own arms is a form of masturbation. By touching ourselves, we subconsciously and automatically comfort ourselves. Touch comforts and relaxes the body for sexual pleasures as well. To the purist, masturbation describes what most people do to their genitals in the shower while getting them scrumptiously clean.

A properly relaxed body has infinite areas for stimulation through touch; to limit pleasurable strokes to genitals, as if they were the sole area of sexual pleasure, is to greatly limit the scope of pleasure via masturbation and its implications for self-love. Were I to rewrite the definition, I would describe masturbation as “a series of strokes and rubs performed on oneself to become better aware of the body’s pleasure points and its physical needs so as to be able to share that information with a partner, eventually, or be able to intimately care for it by one’s self.”
