Chapter 7

Angels Do Exist ~

The Woman Who May Have Saved My Life

The heaviness of my journey was weighing on me. Here I was again without a caregiver to help me with Kathleen. I really had no other choice but to continue looking, as I had already been down the path of a nursing home, I just couldn’t bring myself to reconsider that option. Finally, just when things seemed almost hopeless, a spec of light could be seen through the darkness of the forest my spirit and mind seemed to be trapped in.

I had a conversation with a person who was working for the company I had hired to work on my boat. He told me his sister had been doing Alzheimer’s caregiving work and he thought she might be available. What luck I thought. Maybe this could work out, so I called her up, Nikki was her name. I spoke with her and she told me that yes, she was experienced and would be interested in the position caring for Kathleen, so I hired her.

I found her to be fully competent, fully reliable. She knew how to take care of Kathleen, she was a great help. Between the two of us, however, it was still very difficult to care for someone who is completely comatose, like Kathleen had become. We had to put her in a Roy lift, to aide us in lifting her body. We then would use this to help put her on the portable toilet. We had to help Kathleen with going to the bathroom and then put her back in bed.

This new caregiver, Nikki, became an angel to me. I don’t know if I would even be alive today if it wasn’t for her because of all the stress on me. The love for my wife, and seeing her in this state, the care required and not being able to get away every day, really took its toll on me. Nikki was very reliable, I didn’t pay her as much as I wanted to, and especially for the quality of care she was giving. I could go away and she would spend the weekend at my home with Kathleen. I had peace of mind as I knew her to be one hundred percent trustworthy. I got to thinking one day, “What could I do for her, to show her how much I care, love and appreciate her?” Well, Nikki had an older car, so one day, I was out in the kitchen and had a book on cars laid out. It was open to a Ford Mercury Marquis. I said to Nikki “If you were buying a new car, what color would you like?” She looked at the book and said “Oh, I would like a red one like that one!” I said, “OK, OK Nikki”. I ended up buying her a brand new Mercury Marquis. This was a really nice high level car, full size. The day came when I told her what I had done for her and I took both her and her husband down to the dealership.
