SPACING

An integral part of a windbreak is that the trees and shrubs act together as a unit. Planting the trees and shrubs too closely together can cause their effectiveness to decline due to competition for light and moisture. A common issue with overly close spacing is the loss of foliage due to shading. Without all their leaves the trees’ effectiveness as a windbreak declines.

Medium trees 3–6 4–7

PLANT SELECTION

An important consideration when designing your windbreak is to maximise the diversity of species. This not only provides great habitats for wildlife but reduces the risk of insect, disease or environmental problems.
