Thank God It’s Friday

As soon as my mother and Arnold got to their car and drove away, she burst into tears again, but this time she was unrestrained. Showing vulnerability in the new relationship was difficult for her. She didn’t want to display her emotions openly, but under the circumstances, she couldn’t help herself. By the time they arrived home, Mom was in a state of emotional exhaustion. She hadn’t spent as much time with me as she had hoped, and her grief over the loss of her father was too much to bear.

“I’m so sorry for your sadness, my love. But this is life, and we cannot reverse what happened. We’re helpless,” Arnold ventured, taking Mother in his arms. “You need to get out and clear your mind. Why don’t I take you for a nice dinner this evening?”

“I can’t even think about going out in my emotional state,” Mom insisted.

“I understand how you feel. I was in the same frame of mind when my dear mother passed away—but I know you won’t accomplish anything by remaining here in tears. You must try to distract your mind.” Arnold continued to coax her.

Finally, after a lot of insistence on her husband’s part, Mom agreed. At Arnold’s suggestion, a friend came along to diffuse the sorrow and engage Mom in conversation. It worked! Mom spoke freely and passionately about her life in Albania, about the nostalgic feelings for home that pervaded her heart, and about Muho, who, as Mom later learned, had begged Edi to tell Mom the truth about his failing health. All he’d wanted was one more visit with Mom. Tears flowed in abundance as she spoke, but the conversation was cathartic and cleansed her heart and soul considerably.

In the following days, Mom busied herself with attending language classes and visiting Arnold at his office. Naturally, Muho never left her mind, and she had to constantly remind herself of the importance of moving forward in spite of her enormous loss—and she would see me on Friday, she reminded herself. Though life was so uncertain, she took great comfort in knowing that each Friday, she’d be seeing me.

Fridays quickly became her favorite day of the week—and, of course, it was my favorite too. My mother and Arnold would pick me up in Basel and take me to their home in Zürich. We spent hours of quality time together, shopping, taking long walks, and frequenting restaurants. I was on top of the world, just being able to reach out and embrace my mom again. She was no longer in my dreams, but a palpable reality, always there for me, loving me as much as she ever did. Switzerland was no longer a foreign country, and after so much longing, I finally felt whole inside.

My father was well aware of my attachment to Mom, but he insisted on getting his full custody anyway.

“You know, Eduard, Angela is old enough to decide where she wants to live. Let’s settle the matter by asking her,” Mom said one day.
