Chapter 20

Brynna hadn’t participated in such an enjoyable meal like this since her own childhood. Sophie and Garth and their children were so easy and comfortable to be with. She felt like real family. Early in her marriage, she’d dreamed of this sort of thing but never got to experience it. But the meal was done now, and little Addison’s head was drooping so low it looked like he was about to do a face-plant into the pasta.

“Looks like someone is sleepy,” Brynna said.

“Two someones.” Sophie nodded to Lucy. “Tell Bree good night, baby girl. Time for you to get ready for bed too.”

To Brynna’s surprise, as Garth scooped up his son, Lucy came over to hug her. “Good night, Bree. It was fun telling stories in the garden.”

“It was fun.” Brynna patted her head. “You’re a very good gardener, Lucy.”

“Will you come back tomorrow?” Lucy asked, rubbing the sleep from her eyes.

“If it’s okay with your mom.” Brynna stood and started to clear the table.

Sophie laughed as she led Addison down the hall. “No worries there, Bree.”

Brynna carried a stack of dishes into the kitchen and had just started to rinse when Garth came in to help.

“You’re a guest. You shouldn’t be doing this,” he told her.

“It’s the least I can do after such a great dinner.”

“Our pleasure. Sophie is definitely a great cook.” He set a rinsed plate in the dishwasher. “And a great mom too.”

“And a great gardener,” Brynna added. “Probably like her mom.”

“Well, I never met her mom, but I’ve heard Sophie’s a lot like her. Although her mom was never into gardening. She didn’t really like being outdoors too much.” Garth shrugged. “I guess Sophie gets the green thumb from Dad’s side. She’s a lot like her grandma.”

“Oh.” Brynna wondered about that as she handed him a plate.

“So, do you feel like you can handle things at the office yet? Or do you still need Sophie’s help?”

“I think I’m okay. It’s pretty well set up. Seems like common sense to run it.”

“Good to know.” He smiled. “Maybe we can convince Sophie to spend more time at home and take it a little easier.”

“Absolutely.” She handed him the last plate.

“How would you feel about helping in the tasting room occasionally?” He closed the dishwasher and leaned against it. “Especially when we get busier, which has already been happening.”

“Sounds like fun to me.” She dried her hands on a dish towel.

“Great. Feel free to pop in and observe anytime. We have a group coming tomorrow at three.”

“I’ll be there, and I’ll even take notes,” she added.

He wiped down the sink then turned to her with a smile. “I’m really glad Sophie hired you, Bree. Not a moment too soon either. We needed you.”

Brynna avoided his eyes as she nodded. It was nice to be needed and appreciated like this, but what would happen when Leroy figured things out? She didn’t want to think about that now. So after Sophie came back to the kitchen, Brynna told them both thank you and good night, then hopped on the bike and pedaled back toward her cottage.
