Chapter 20
Brynna hadnât participated in such an enjoyable meal like this since her own childhood. Sophie and Garth and their children were so easy and comfortable to be with. She felt like real family. Early in her marriage, sheâd dreamed of this sort of thing but never got to experience it. But the meal was done now, and little Addisonâs head was drooping so low it looked like he was about to do a face-plant into the pasta.
âLooks like someone is sleepy,â Brynna said.
âTwo someones.â Sophie nodded to Lucy. âTell Bree good night, baby girl. Time for you to get ready for bed too.â
To Brynnaâs surprise, as Garth scooped up his son, Lucy came over to hug her. âGood night, Bree. It was fun telling stories in the garden.â
âIt was fun.â Brynna patted her head. âYouâre a very good gardener, Lucy.â
âWill you come back tomorrow?â Lucy asked, rubbing the sleep from her eyes.
âIf itâs okay with your mom.â Brynna stood and started to clear the table.
Sophie laughed as she led Addison down the hall. âNo worries there, Bree.â
Brynna carried a stack of dishes into the kitchen and had just started to rinse when Garth came in to help.
âYouâre a guest. You shouldnât be doing this,â he told her.
âItâs the least I can do after such a great dinner.â
âOur pleasure. Sophie is definitely a great cook.â He set a rinsed plate in the dishwasher. âAnd a great mom too.â
âAnd a great gardener,â Brynna added. âProbably like her mom.â
âWell, I never met her mom, but Iâve heard Sophieâs a lot like her. Although her mom was never into gardening. She didnât really like being outdoors too much.â Garth shrugged. âI guess Sophie gets the green thumb from Dadâs side. Sheâs a lot like her grandma.â
âOh.â Brynna wondered about that as she handed him a plate.
âSo, do you feel like you can handle things at the office yet? Or do you still need Sophieâs help?â
âI think Iâm okay. Itâs pretty well set up. Seems like common sense to run it.â
âGood to know.â He smiled. âMaybe we can convince Sophie to spend more time at home and take it a little easier.â
âAbsolutely.â She handed him the last plate.
âHow would you feel about helping in the tasting room occasionally?â He closed the dishwasher and leaned against it. âEspecially when we get busier, which has already been happening.â
âSounds like fun to me.â She dried her hands on a dish towel.
âGreat. Feel free to pop in and observe anytime. We have a group coming tomorrow at three.â
âIâll be there, and Iâll even take notes,â she added.
He wiped down the sink then turned to her with a smile. âIâm really glad Sophie hired you, Bree. Not a moment too soon either. We needed you.â
Brynna avoided his eyes as she nodded. It was nice to be needed and appreciated like this, but what would happen when Leroy figured things out? She didnât want to think about that now. So after Sophie came back to the kitchen, Brynna told them both thank you and good night, then hopped on the bike and pedaled back toward her cottage.
