The battlefield looked as though it had been hit by Godzilla or a tornado – trees shredded and bleeding white rubber sap and blood from bullet holes, and bodies, body parts and weapons scattered in the mayhem. Some bodies were hanging from rubber trees, snipers shot by my men or blown up there by the artillery. Whether the over 200 enemy dead had been shot or killed by artillery, many were torn apart by the thousands of large pieces of sharp and irregular steel artillery shrapnel flying through the air like razors. Private ‘Sting’ Hornett, who now lives in Bowen and gave his ‘Ratcatcher’ Flag to the Maryborough Museum in 2011, indicated one he shot, still hanging in a tree, recalling the enemy soldier must have been a ‘medic’, given all the bandages he had dropped into the mud.
