SIGNS AT CHRIST'S FIRST AND SECOND COMING

The more we compare Jesus' first coming with the times preceding His second coming, the more interesting the parallel becomes. In the time before the birth of Christ, the entire Mediterranean world was under the occupation and sovereignty of the Roman Empire. This time was known as the Pax Romana, or "Roman Peace." In the time preceding the Second Advent, we believe the Bible teaches that there will, once again, be a world-wide government promising universal peace. We call this anticipated global government the New World Order. Paul corroborates that there will indeed be a space of time when the world will announce an era of peace and safety (1 Thessalonians 5:3), which will be followed death and destruction.

At the time of Jesus' birth, the world was filled with wicked rulers. Herod was so ungodly that he ordered the death of countless numbers of young Jewish children. Today, we also live in an era of wicked rulers who have forgotten the value of human life. Every year, under the protection of these leaders and their government's laws, thousands of innocent children are slaughtered within their mothers' wombs.

To announce His birth, God placed a cosmic sign in the heavens - the star of Bethlehem. Jesus said that the days before His return would be marked by signs in the sun, moon and stars (Luke 21:25). These, as well as other signs, stirred the people of the First Century. In that day, many people were expecting the Messiah to be revealed. This is one of the reasons that John the Baptist was queried, "Are you the Messiah?" (John 1:19-20). Today, many are interpreting the signs to mean that very soon, the Messiah will once again be revealed to the world. There are many Jews who agree with us, not on who that person will be, but on the fact that we are living in the days of redemption.
