Their visit was short. Russ met with Cliff, allowing her to read the brief report.

“Not much,” Cliff said, scanning the pages.

“Yeah, it’s early. There’ll be more in a few days. We’ve talked to the victim’s family and friends. We got a good idea who she was with. I’ll give ya a call and let you know.”

“Thanks, Russ.” Cliff handed him the file, and they were off.

“That was amazing, Dr. Clifford,” Sue said from the backseat. “You really worked at Scotland Yard?”

“Yep, and the FBI,” Ben answered for her.

Cliff just smiled and listened as she drove.

After given direction, she pulled into Sue’s driveway.

“Sue, I have an idea. Why don’t you come over to my house for a barbecue, say, Friday? What do you say? Ben, I hope, will have no other plans.”

Ben exchanged blushes with Sue.

“That sounds like fun. I have no plans,” she said, avoiding Ben.

“Wonderful. Bring your swimsuit. Wait, there’s a parental consideration, isn’t there? Make sure you clear it with your parents. Ben will talk with his mother.”

Sue agreed. Ben glanced at Cliff. “I-I’ll just walk to the door,” he said, and Cliff nodded.

“Good man,” she whispered and winked.

She waited for Ben, who smiled while buckling his seat belt.

“So she seems like a nice girl.”

“Uh, sure. She’s nice.”

Cliff stole a glance. “Your mother texted me. She’s done with laundry and at my house doing work. Does she ever sit still?”

Ben laughed. “Not really.”

“How about lunch? We have time. What do you say?”

“Sure,” Ben said. “I’ll never say no to lunch.”

“I thought as much. Your mother must go broke feeding you two.”

“You have no idea how much Mattie eats.”

They exchanged glances, then burst into laughter. Yes, Cliff thought, she liked these kids. She liked their mother, as well.
