But a fresh purgatory had to be gone through by them all before they finally set foot on land again. Normally the voyage to London, in the summer, was a rather pleasant affair of some eight days. For Richard and Minna it lasted at least three and a half weeks.3 Storms more than once drove them out of their course: on the 27th July the captain was forced to seek harbour on the Norwegian coast. As the boat made its way into the sheltering fiord the cries of the crew as they furled the sails came echoing from the rocks in a rhythm that Wagner was to remember later, when he was writing the seamen’s chorus in the Flying Dutchman. The little village at which they had landed was Sandwike, a few miles from Arendal:

“Sandwike it is; full well I know the bay,”
