In our experience those are fine words but the reality is anything but.

If you are struggling with getting help for your child as we are, my advice is go to the top wherever you can. The professionals we see are doing their job to the best of their limited resources and they are already over-worked. Your MP is the person who is elected to make a difference on your behalf. Your local paper should tell you when their surgery is in your area and you can go along and request their help. Alternatively, your GP may write letters on your behalf if he/she is as understanding as our GP is. Ideally, joining together with other parents in your area or on the internet makes you feel less isolated and more aware of what help is available – there are now many groups of parents who ‘meet up’ to encourage and share their knowledge, supporting each other as they tell it like it is.

It is a sad fact that the health service fails children like Luke and the only way to change the system is to make the people in power aware of our plight. We need professionals who are aware of all the implications of Luke’s disability and we need them now, not in two years’ time.
