Cherise: Caught in a Family of Sociopaths

The following experience by Cherise illustrates the same kind of pattern of creating what seems to be a good relationship at first but then turns ugly and violent.

Cherise’s story also raises some questions about the nature of becoming a sociopath. Can becoming a sociopath be due to genetic influences? Or does the environment in which one is raised play a part? Cherise’s story addresses these issues, because her husband Terrence was raised in a family of doctors and some nurses, who followed the family patriarch’s medical tradition. They also showed the classic traits of a sociopath—such as no conscience, a lack of empathy and emotion, a determination to win at all costs, and frequently lying to support this behavior.

For Cherise, then twenty-eight, the descent into the crazy-making world of the sociopath began when she went to work in the medical practice of Jarod, the family patriarch, where Terrence, thirty-seven, also worked. She and Terrence got to talking during lunch and coffee breaks in the office kitchen, and soon she felt a strong emotional and physical attraction to him. As Cherise described it:

“It was like we were soul mates. Whatever I liked, he liked the same thing. Movies, food, ideal vacation spots. It didn’t matter. If I mentioned really liking something, he did, too. So I felt this strong connection, like we were meant to be together; like he completed me.

Though several other girls who worked as receptionists warned Cherise about getting involved with Terrence, telling her “He’s not what he seems,” she ignored their warnings. She felt they were just jealous. When one of the women told her that Terrence got her pregnant and she gave the child up for adoption, she wanted to believe Terrence when he admitted everything, and explained that he had given up his younger, wilder ways.

So Cherise was willing to forgive and forget, when he assured her that she was the only one for him now. After that, for a few weeks, Cherise felt very much cherished and loved, since Terrence put her on a pedestal by praising her highly, telling her how smart she was, and repeatedly saying how much he loved and cared for her.

But his words were all a sham, as Cherise soon found out after she got pregnant and according to Cherise, “He was horrible to me.”

For one thing, she discovered Terrence was still secretly dating three other women, when she found their phone and email messages at the clinic, and none of the women knew about the others. When he took her to a restaurant for dinner, she confronted him about the women. Though at first Terrence denied it and accused the woman of lying, Cherise persisted, telling him about the messages. Likewise, he firmly denied it when Cherise told him she had heard about a second employee who had gotten pregnant and had an abortion.

“I would never support that, since I’m very pro-life,” he claimed.

When Cherise said she had seen the woman’s receipts
