ILINX INSTRUCTS: CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT USING THE AUCTION MECHANIC

The Auction mechanic is all about sorting out what is more valuable from what is less valuable and then making effective decisions based on that evaluation. A great way to use this mechanic is to help you and your students manage group projects. Here's how it could work.

Before the group project begins, determine a way to give each student some form of currency. Students will need this currency in order to bid effectively when the project is beginning to take shape. Consider giving students bonus questions at the start of five classes that are worth 1, 2, or 3 points. If a student gets all five of the most difficult questions correct, he or she would have 15 points to spend—the maximum possible.

We all know that one thing students find frustrating about group projects is that sometimes a part of the group carries a disproportionate share of the work burden. In this model, students would use their currency to bid on clearly defined roles within a group project. This would give each student the opportunity to narrow down the roles available and buy whichever one was most attractive. Moreover, it would give you, the teacher, the responsibility to differentiate the roles clearly enough to measure students' work, relative success, and impact students have on the group as a whole.

Most important, it gives students the responsibility to think carefully about how they can work effectively in groups and direct their energy toward what they do really well. Group work managed in this way forces students to be accountable to their fellow classmates in ways that they directly agreed to be held accountable. Furthermore, it gives you the ability to evaluate students separately from the group.
