The indwelling of the Trinity is easy to understand and it is difficult to understand. It is so patent that a child can appreciate its splendor, so mysterious that theologians have disagreed for centuries in explaining its details. Yet there is no truth more central to the Christian mystery than man's union with his God, a truth mentioned repeatedly in both the Old and New Testaments, a truth prominent in the ecclesiology of the Second Vatican Council, a truth basic to liturgical and contemplative prayer, a truth that many find irresistibly attractive when it is taught in a fresh, scriptural manner.

The indwelling mystery is crucial to the supernatural economy established by an incredibly loving God. It is the teaching of the Catholic Church, based on the manifest testimony of Scripture, that the divine inhabitation is the end or goal of the divine economy.

The ultimate end of the whole divine economy is the entry of God's creatures into the perfect unity of the Blessed Trinity (John 17:21–23). But even now we are called to be a dwelling for the Most Holy Trinity: “If a man loves me,” says the Lord, “he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him, and make our home with him” (John 14:23).1
