Many years later, when he was in exile in France, Leonardo remembered the dam with the movable sluice gate he had erected at Friuli. Edmondo Solmi has suggested that Leonardo’s notes on divers, underwater attacks on ships, and methods of destroying ships on the water may date from the time of his brief residence in Venice, but in fact these notes belong to an earlier period.

Leonardo evidently spent a good deal of time in Venice among artists and musicians. It is believed that he met Giorgione and Titian, who were both in their early twenties and already famous. He certainly met the lutanist Lorenzo da Pavia, who briefly described in a letter to Isabella d’Este his meeting with Leonardo:

Most illustrious Lady,

I send you by the bearer a large lute in the Spanish fashion, made of walnut wood, in its natural color, that truly seems to me the best that will ever be heard. I have been ill. I have not been able to finish the black and white lute. I will make it like this one, in the Spanish fashion.

Leonardo da Vinci is in Venice. He has shown me a picture of Your Highness, which is very natural and appears to me as perfect as it can be. This is all I have to write you by this messenger. Assuring you once more of my respect, I write myself Your Highness’s faithful servant,

LORENZO DA PAVIA

Venice, March 15, 1500
