Chapter 9
Dolin hurt. Not just his body, but his mind as well. And if this formula was incorrect, he had no idea what either of the men would do to him. Glancing over at Ward—his head anyway—he wished that he’d been the one with his head on the pike that Benton had put in the lab, and not his friend Ward.
Not that he cared that Ward was gone. The man had suffered little compared to what he was. The necklace that he’d been required to wear both day and night was draining him. And not only that, but he thought that he was being poisoned as well. Hector was true to his word. But Dolin wished that he would be done with it.
“Well?” Dolin cringed when he heard the sharp voice behind him. Daily, one or the other, Benton or Randall, would come to the work area and ask him how his progress was going. It wasn’t, so far as he could see. It wasn’t as if he knew what he was doing anyway. “Are you ready for the next test dosage?”
That was another thing they were doing to him. Whenever he would come up with a formula, just basically tossing things into a container and hoping for the best, he’d have to try it. Inject it into his body or eat it. Whatever they wanted, he had to do, and Dolin was at their mercy. And it wasn’t killing him quickly enough.
“I have been trying to figure out this wording. Do you understand this?” Dolin held up the paper to Randall and wasn’t surprised to see the man had no more idea than he did. “I don’t know what some of these things are. And if they’re here, in his lab, then I can’t find them.”
“Did you check the locked area that I showed you yesterday?” He didn’t want to go there. It was where Randal had had him take all the dead when they’d gotten here two days ago. “Go there now and see if you can find any of the shit on his list. I’m going to go down to the other place and see if I can almost kill me a meth operator to help you out.”
Dolin nodded and picked up the key that had been laid out for him when he’d arrived this morning. Randall told him to be quick about it, and Dolin wanted to sob. This just wasn’t right. He was in charge, not that fool of a human.
“You having a good time?” He stared at Hector and then moved by him without a word. “You should know that you’re never going to figure out what he wants you to do. You’re not smart enough.”
“Of course I’m not smart enough in this area. I have other purposes, and being a lab person isn’t what I was born to do.” Hector asked him what he thought he was born to do. “Rule. And I should be ruling him, not him ordering me around as if I were nothing more than…well, than a housekeeper or other servant.
