CHAPTER 18

The Darkness

SIR LONDON REACTED QUICK as a flash and pulled the fuse from the cannon. It turned out that the cannon wasn’t loaded, but we had gotten quite a shock all the same. A short while later, Sir London attached a long rope to the wall next to the tub in the storeroom with an expert sailor’s knot. He planned to run the rope all the way to the captain’s cabin, so that after the explosion we could pull ourselves along it from the protective tub all the way to the freshly made hole. Otherwise we’d never find our way in the pitch black with the water rushing in at us.

Lilli examined the knot with a critical eye. “Hopefully this one holds.”

“Don’t tell me you think my knot came undone and let the tile fall down!” Sir London replied indignantly.

“Well, a thick rope like that can’t have snapped,” Lilli grumbled.

“There is a third possibility,” Sir London said in a low voice, more to himself than to anyone else.

We began to drag the rope towards the captain’s cabin, pulling it tight and fixing it to the wall every few yards.

“And what would that be? It was either the knot or the rope, I can’t think of anything else it could have been,” Lilli insisted.

“Then let’s leave it at that for now,” groaned Sir London. He was breathing hard. It wasn’t just pulling the rope that was getting to him, but the air too.

“We’re getting short on oxygen,” Sir London gasped. “We have to hurry.”

“What’s the other possibility?” Lilli wasn’t giving up.

Sir London seemed to realize she’d be like a dog with a bone until he told her. “It’s probably nothing more than a myth.”

Marvin’s ears pricked up at that. “A myth?”

Quietly and calmly, Sir London went on. “There are many rumors about Lotterlulu’s last raid. He’s supposed to have stolen a legendary object. The myth told of the object being protected by a mysterious ‘dark power’ which would find it anywhere. According to legend, the people in service of this dark power, the so-called guardians, only have black nothingness where their eyes and mouths should be. Don’t worry, that part’s just nonsense. But when Lotterlulu realized how hopeless his situation was, he aligned himself with these guardians and created a hiding place for the object that was better than any of his previous hiding places. He left the object there and disappeared forever.”

Marvin jumped up and down in excitement. “What was the object?”

Lilli asked quietly, “You think someone from that dark power cut the rope? And maybe it was one of those guardians that left the Coke bottle here too?”

Only then did I notice we’d already arrived at the captain’s cabin.

Sir London held the oil lamp in front of our faces and gave us a meaningful look. “I’ll tell you more once we’re out of here. Look alive.”

Suddenly the lamp went out. Even the light from the porthole seemed to have dimmed and was barely perceptible anymore.
