“That nice Gabe Dawson just pulled up in that dented rental car,” Bess said from the back room of the shop.

Maddy glanced at the clocks on the far wall. All six of them, ranging from a hand-carved German cuckoo to a chrome French Art Deco. “He’s early. I told him nine.”

“I don’t remember that part of the conversation,” Bess returned. “We usually do deliveries during lunch.”

“I think we decided to change the time over dinner Wednesday night.”

Bess dropped the order slips in her hand and they fluttered to the ground like pink butterflies. “What?”

“You were at the school yesterday, Bess. And I guess today, I forgot to mention . . .” Maddy reached down and scooped up the papers.

“You forgot to mention you went out on a date with the best-looking guy in Wolf Creek? Mads, you led with the weather this morning.” Bess smacked her forehead with her palm. “She goes on a date and leads with the weather? Who does that?”

“It wasn’t a date.”

“Two people having dinner together. What do you call that?”

“The man was persuasive and hungry. I was being hospitable to a stranger in town.”

“And this morning?”

“I honestly forgot.” Or had tried desperately to forget, last night around three a.m., when she’d lain awake thinking about his blue eyes and the curve of his lips. Maddy rubbed the bridge of her nose.

“What’s wrong?” Bess peered close.

Maddy shook her head. How could she explain the way Gabe made her feel? The way he looked into her eyes at dinner and told her he was going to fix things. For her.

“Something isn’t right here,” Maddy finally said. “The man is too perfect.”

“Not all men are like—”

She raised her palm to silence Bess. “Don’t even say his name. I don’t want to be reminded of what a naïve fool I was. Everything he told me was a lie or an exaggeration. Spoiled rich kid. And the mayor defended him.”

“The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.”

“You’re saying the mayor of Wolf Creek is a liar and a philanderer?” Maddy’s jaw sagged.

“No. Is that what that saying means?”

Maddy released a belly laugh. “Oh, Bess, you are hilarious.”

“I’m glad I can be comic relief.”

The back door buzzer sounded. “Is it okay to open the door?”

“Yes. Let him in.”

A smiling Gabe stood on the threshold in faded jeans and a black T-shirt.

He looked good. Too good. Boy golly, Gabe Dawson was full of surprises. For a guy with a desk job he was very muscular, and the T-shirt only accentuated his biceps.

“Ladies, I took Maddy’s advice and brought vanilla scones.”

Bess whirled around to Maddy. “You told him about the evil scones?”

Maddy chuckled. “They are only evil when eaten in copious amounts.”

“I brought three.” Gabe held up a bag.

“We’re safe,” Maddy added.

“Mads, do you mind if I make a quick run to the post office?” Bess asked.

“Sure.”

“Don’t anyone touch my coffee and scone,” Bess added.

“Never,” Maddy said. She turned to Gabe. “Follow me.” She led him to a corner of the
