CHAPTER SIX

‘HEREwe are—one gin and tonic.’

Zane’s voice broke into her thoughts and she turned to find he was by her side, holding out a glass.

Taking it, she said composedly, ‘Thank you.’

‘Try it and see if it’s to your taste.’

As he spoke, as if determined to destroy any attempt at composure, he brushed the tendril of hair away from her cheek and tucked it behind her ear.

His action turned the intended sip into a gulp and she was forced to cough.

‘Not too strong, I trust?’ Though his expression was bland, innocent, she thought she could detect an air of satisfaction, almost triumph.

‘No…No, it’s fine, thank you.’

Telling herself vexedly that she would have to exercise a great deal more self-control, she took refuge once again in staring out over the countryside while she sipped more carefully.

Zane sat down next to her.

Much too close for comfort.

Stretching his long legs indolently, his eyes fixed on the rolling hills, he began to drink his own whisky soda.

Almost as soon as the sun had vanished from view, the sky started to lose its brightness and a purple velvet dusk began to creep stealthily out of hiding.

The cypresses stood out, tall and dark and straight, against the deep blue sky, a myriad stars began to appear and gauzy-winged bats flitted around in the silky air.

‘Night falls quickly here,’ Zane remarked. Giving her a little intimate smile, he added with evident satisfaction, ‘It’s taken some planning, but I’ve been looking forward to this.’

‘To what?’ she asked sharply. Too sharply.

‘To being on holiday.’

Of course. What else could he have meant?

Trying to sound more relaxed, she observed, ‘Though it’s nearly dark, it’s still beautifully warm.’

‘Yes, though at Severo, I’m pleased to say, we don’t have the kind of intense heat and humidity that Florence can have, the kind that keeps you awake at night unless you have air-conditioning.’

Softly, he added, ‘Here you can make love, then lie naked and comfortable in each other’s arms…’

Her throat going dry at the intimate picture his words painted, she said the first thing that came into her head. ‘I haven’t seen the swimming pool you mentioned earlier…’

‘It’s a couple of levels below us and to the left. You can’t see it from here because of the overhang.

There’s an open-air Jacuzzi too. Ever been in one?’

‘No.’

After a drifting silence, he went on, ‘It’s really something to sit in a Jacuzzi under the stars when the fireflies are out and the moonlit air’s still warm and scented with myrtle.’

She saw the gleam of his eyes in the deepening dusk as he added, ‘If you’ve no inhibitions about taking off your clothes, we could try it later…’

Not on your life! she thought.

She had believed Paul when he’d assured her that Zane Lorenson never mixed business with pleasure.

But out here on the dusky terrace, the setting was far too romantic, and feeling the sexual tension that seemed to stretch between them like barbed wire—a tension she had been aware of all along but had refused to acknowledge—she wondered anxiously if Paul could have been wrong.
