Test, Test, Test Your Color

Testing on matching leather shows the final color.

Vegetable-tanned leather turns darker and forms a patina when exposed to sunlight, but it bleaches lighter when exposed to extreme amounts of sunlight. (See the section “Color and Finish Testing” on page.) Dyes and markers allow the leather to show through so the color will change as the leather forms a patina. Also, when dyes and markers are applied to leather, the result can be darker than when they are applied to other types of materials. Dyes and paints also produce different coloring effects when diluted to different strengths and layered with multiple coatings.

Whichever colors and mediums you decide to use on your finished piece must be tested on a scrap piece of leather with the same leather darkness (patina) as the leather your project is made from. This testing will give you a true representation of what the color will do when added to your project. Skipping this test may result in you being unhappy with a project that you spent a lot of time and materials to create.
