The exercises are placed with the 1st finger on the 5th fret G string but you could play the “12121313 etc” finger pattern (and backwards) anywhere on the fret-board.

Minimising Movement

In the photo below left, the fingers are kept close to the fret-board. This way less movement is needed when changing between them. Try to keep the fingers near the fret-board like this when they are not in use. To the right the fingers are not kept close to the fret-board making for unnecessary movement. This may be what comes naturally at first but it’s best to aim for minimal movement until it becomes second nature.
