FINDING EARS TO HEAR
How does this work? you may wonder. If God isn’t going to speak audibly, and if He’s not physically present as a human who speaks our language, how are we supposed to understand what He’s saying? How do we get those ears to hear?
The disciples must have wondered the same thing when Jesus told them He was leaving to return to His Father. What would they do without the God-with-skin-on they’d experienced daily for the past three years? Without Jesus beside them, telling them what to do, how would they survive, let alone carry out the mission He’d given them to do?
But the Lord reassured them that He wouldn’t leave them alone or stop communicating with them. “The Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you” (John 14:26).
And that’s exactly what happened ten days after Jesus ascended to heaven. The Spirit came, the fire fell, and the trembling, fearful people who had felt so lost after Jesus died were now suddenly filled with power (Acts 1–2). More important, they were filled with Christ Himself.
For Emmanuel—“God with us”—had sent the Holy Spirit to be “God in us.” And nothing would ever be the same. Not for them. Not for you and me.
The Spirit of God now dwells in the heart of every believer. Filling us, if we’ll allow Him, with everything we need for this life and the one to come. Leading and guiding us into all truth (John 16:13). Confirming that we are, indeed, children of God and deeply loved (Romans 8:15–16).
And, yes, speaking to us—though not always in the ways we might expect.
“Listen to your heart,” Henri Nouwen writes. “It’s there that Jesus speaks most intimately to you.… He doesn’t shout. He doesn’t thrust himself upon you. His voice is an unassuming voice, very nearly a whisper, the voice of a gentle love.”5
It’s a voice that’s easy to grieve and, unfortunately, even easier to miss or dismiss—unless we listen intently and train our spiritual ears to hear.
