CHAPTER 9
The living room at Shell Cottage really wasnât made for nervous pacing, but Lou was giving it a damn good go anyway. Unfortunately, the two-and-a-half steps it afforded her were making her feel more like a human ping-pong ball rather than helping her to release any nervous energy.
Pausing for a moment, Lou let out an irritated breath. She was annoyed with herself for being so ridiculous. She had no reason to be this worked up about Seanâs arrival⦠but telling herself that wasnât making things any easier.
âGah!â
She promptly resumed her rattling around. Anything was better than standing still and staring out of the window like a dog waiting for its master to return.
Sean was due at any moment. As sheâd basically been on high alert waiting for him since sheâd got up â Lou had tidied the cottage to within an inch of its life. Sheâd cleaned and primped and polished⦠and what was the point? It would just be covered in flecks of old wallpaper and a layer of plaster dust again before she knew it!
Lou couldnât help it â she had to keep her hands busy somehow! By this point, things had gone from bad to ridiculous though, and sheâd rearranged the magazines on her minuscule coffee table about a dozen times. Sheâd started by stacking them, then sheâd spread them out in a fan. Then, having kicked herself for being the worldâs biggest idiot, sheâd swept them back into a pile. Now, she was starting to obsess about which one should sit on top and what it might say about her.
âIdiot!â she muttered, rearranging them again â this time in chronological order.
Why the hell was she behaving like this?! It was so out of character, she barely recognised herself. But then, Lou had been finding out all sorts of new things about herself since sheâd arrived in Seabury.
Having time alone away from Brendan and his particular brand of soul-sucking had given her a chance to just be. Lou knew it wasnât fair to attribute all her problems to him⦠after all, he hadnât been a total monster. In fact, sheâd still loved him enough at the end that it had snapped something inside her when sheâd caught him in bed with her.
Lou blew out a breath as the customary wave of hurt swept over her. When she was forced to tell the story to anyone, she was always careful to make sure that it was a comedy anecdote.
Haha yes, he traded me for a younger model.
Can you believe she was nineteen and had a nose piercing?
I had to move away â thereâs no way the poor lamb could compete with me â it wouldnât have been fair to her.
Hahahahaha!
In reality â it just hurt. A lot. The term âfinding them in bed togetherâ made it sound all fluffy and cutesy when it had been anything but. It had been gross, and sweaty, and there were images sheâd never be able to get out of her head.
