In lakes and ponds, plants add the oxygen to the water that fish, amphibians, reptiles, and insects need to breathe. In the winter, when many lakes ice over, ice and snow blocks sunlight from reaching the plants. The rate of photosynthesis drops, as does the oxygen level in the water.

This can cause some fish to die in a phenomenon called winterkill. Some aquatic animals have adapted to hibernate during cold winter weather. Hibernation slows down their body systems, so they require less oxygen to survive.

GET TO KNOW: THE DEAD SEA

The Dead Sea isn’t really a sea. It’s a massive saline lake in Jordan, Israel, and Palestine. The Dead Sea is almost 10 times saltier than the ocean! Because the water is so salty, it can’t support any life forms bigger than bacteria and fungi, so there are no plants in its waters. And, because of its high concentration of salt, people can’t swim under the water even if they try—the water pushes them right back to the surface!
