Looking back, her life had more or less ceased to be mundane once Neighbours had taken off, and with it, the growth of her fame. Perhaps too, it was becoming less likely that her elaborate dream to retreat from the hype of it all, such as going to university or the backpack thing around Europe, or even, more simply, just on a long-distance road trip was becoming more and more firmly placed in the past.

Seventeen hit records in little more than four years had resulted in three and half of those years under constant exposure to the demands of being a teen star, and in that time, she had suffered nervous exhaustion on several occasions, plus many more minor illnesses.

In addition to that, of course, she had the stress of her failed relationship with Michael Hutchence, an increasingly hostile press, and with two of her last four singles failing to make the top ten, it was no small wonder she longed to get away from it all for a while.

And who could blame her. In fact, it was soon after the release of her eighteenth single, the aforementioned Finer Feelings, in April 1992, that she decided she would see out much of the rest of the year enjoying a life free from work commitments. ‘The clichés about the price of fame are true. I push myself to the limit, and then I collapse. The day after a tour I fall ill.’

All the same she returned to her public life every now and then. She agreed to take part in ‘Trading Places’ - a high-profile fundraising event which would in the end contribute towards the fifteen million pounds needed to set up the world’s first breast cancer research centre. It was an event where fans were invited to seek sponsorship for the pleasure of becoming their favourite star for a day.

‘I hope you enjoy being me as much as I do,’ Kylie wrote in the booklet she provided to enable those taking part to come as close as possible to her real self. Her tips covered everything from changing hairstyles at least three times a day, dancing their lycra leggings off, and appointing a friend to play the part of Yvonne, her trusted personal assistant, who also doubled as hairdresser to take care of the necessary style changes.

Zane O’Donnell was still very much in the picture and although the couple were living together in Paris for several months, living in a friend’s apartment, and keeping their media exposure very much in check, they never allowed matters to snowball out of control. Sure, she was still avoiding all the attendant touring and publicity duties that entailed so much of her time in previous years, but for the moment, at any rate, she was quite happy to enjoy the freedom of being in between projects.

Her absence from public life also gave rise to rumour upon rumour. Even when she did reappear in the spotlight, perhaps she became equally sick of having to answer the countless questions that were thrown at her.
