The second line explicates the meaning of the Davidic sonship as being “the most exalted of the kings of the earth.” All of these texts represent interpretations of verse 19 of 2 Samuel 7, and show that since the god who is represented by the Davidic king is both supreme and universal, the Davidic king has the highest rank among human beings. Despite critical textual problems,32 2 Samuel 7:19 is the key to the universalisation of the messianic vision in the psalms and prophets.33

In the response section, 2 Samuel 7:18–29, note how the word “good” can be used to refer to the covenant. The comment of Höver-Johag is apt:

In 2 S. 7:28, ṭôḇâ refers to the covenant of Yahweh with the house of David (cf. v. 29; 1 S. 25:30; 2 Ch. 24:16; Akk. dabābu ṭābūta = Heb. dabbēr ṭôb).34

This demonstrates that the term bĕrît need not occur in a text for the author to be speaking about a covenant.
