Chapter 7

The first person I decided to announce my decision to was Lisa. She had never liked Kid Power, so she was bound to be happy that I’d decided to give it up. I put on my boots and my coat and sneaked out of the house. It was amazing that after such a long day, there was still daylight left. But there was, and when I reached Lisa’s house, I found her outside throwing snowballs at her little brother Stevie. So I joined in. We missed each other more often than we made a direct hit, but that was okay, too. Just throwing the snow around felt good.

After we’d finished with the snowballs, we made tiny snowpeople. There wasn’t enough snow on the ground for a full-sized snowman, so we made miniatures instead. Stevie is usually a pest, but he was so happy we were playing with him that he behaved okay. And I enjoyed doing something with snow other than shoveling it.

Lisa’s housekeeper had hot chocolate and cookies waiting for us when we went inside. That was the warmest I’d felt all day, and certainly the happiest. I’d had fun, for a change, and I was about to give up all my responsibilities and return to life as a normal kid. Things were going to be okay from then on.

“Guess what I’ve decided to do,” I told Lisa, as we took some extra cookies to her bedroom.

“I give up,” Lisa said. Lisa isn’t very good at guessing.

“I’ve decided to give up Kid Power,” I told her triumphantly. “I’m going to let Johnny Richards take it over. He wants it more than I do these days.”

“You can’t do that,” Lisa said. “You can’t give up Kid Power. It’s your life.”

“It is not my life,” I replied.

“Well, you created it,” Lisa said. “And you’ve worked so hard for months to make it into a success. You don’t just give up something like that because a mood hits you.”

“The mood wasn’t what hit me,” I said. “Besides, I thought you’d be happy. You’re always telling me what a mistake Kid Power is.”

“I don’t think Kid Power is a mistake,” Lisa said. “Just when you get carried away with it. But this winter it’s very different. You’ve listened to my complaints, and you’ve hired Carol to help out, and I know the other kids are happy to have a chance to earn money. You owe it to everybody to keep Kid Power going forever. Besides, I thought you wanted the computer.”

“I do,” I said. “But maybe my parents will buy one for me.”

“That really makes me mad,” Lisa said. “I thought you were willing to work for what you wanted. I didn’t realize you were the sort of person who just waited for somebody else to get it for you.”

“I’m twelve years old,” I pointed out. “I don’t exactly support myself. My parents pay for my food and my clothes, and if they’re willing to pay for my computer, then that’s okay, too.
