Chapter 7
The first person I decided to announce my decision to was Lisa. She had never liked Kid Power, so she was bound to be happy that Iâd decided to give it up. I put on my boots and my coat and sneaked out of the house. It was amazing that after such a long day, there was still daylight left. But there was, and when I reached Lisaâs house, I found her outside throwing snowballs at her little brother Stevie. So I joined in. We missed each other more often than we made a direct hit, but that was okay, too. Just throwing the snow around felt good.
After weâd finished with the snowballs, we made tiny snowpeople. There wasnât enough snow on the ground for a full-sized snowman, so we made miniatures instead. Stevie is usually a pest, but he was so happy we were playing with him that he behaved okay. And I enjoyed doing something with snow other than shoveling it.
Lisaâs housekeeper had hot chocolate and cookies waiting for us when we went inside. That was the warmest Iâd felt all day, and certainly the happiest. Iâd had fun, for a change, and I was about to give up all my responsibilities and return to life as a normal kid. Things were going to be okay from then on.
âGuess what Iâve decided to do,â I told Lisa, as we took some extra cookies to her bedroom.
âI give up,â Lisa said. Lisa isnât very good at guessing.
âIâve decided to give up Kid Power,â I told her triumphantly. âIâm going to let Johnny Richards take it over. He wants it more than I do these days.â
âYou canât do that,â Lisa said. âYou canât give up Kid Power. Itâs your life.â
âIt is not my life,â I replied.
âWell, you created it,â Lisa said. âAnd youâve worked so hard for months to make it into a success. You donât just give up something like that because a mood hits you.â
âThe mood wasnât what hit me,â I said. âBesides, I thought youâd be happy. Youâre always telling me what a mistake Kid Power is.â
âI donât think Kid Power is a mistake,â Lisa said. âJust when you get carried away with it. But this winter itâs very different. Youâve listened to my complaints, and youâve hired Carol to help out, and I know the other kids are happy to have a chance to earn money. You owe it to everybody to keep Kid Power going forever. Besides, I thought you wanted the computer.â
âI do,â I said. âBut maybe my parents will buy one for me.â
âThat really makes me mad,â Lisa said. âI thought you were willing to work for what you wanted. I didnât realize you were the sort of person who just waited for somebody else to get it for you.â
âIâm twelve years old,â I pointed out. âI donât exactly support myself. My parents pay for my food and my clothes, and if theyâre willing to pay for my computer, then thatâs okay, too.
