Kelly Tough could well be an expression of how God uses what the enemy means for evil to strengthen a family for good.

While survival and sacrifice have tested us, staining the pages of our story with many tears, God’s boundless grace, love, forgiveness, and hope are woven throughout it in a way that holds it all together. And if there’s an object lesson to being Kelly Tough, that’s it—His ability in our inability, His strength in our weakness, our standing against any and all odds when we kneel before Him.

Prayer is powerful. I’ve seen the impact firsthand and I’m continually amazed. What amazes and humbles me the most is the fact that God already knows all things. He knows every single word that will come rolling off of our tongues before we pray anything. He knows the requests we keep silent, our thoughts, intentions, and motives. He sees us, all of us—what we can see in the mirror’s reflection and what we hide. And yet, He beckons us, invites us to come to Him anyway. That being said, this should motivate us to be sincere, open, and honest, pouring our hearts out before the God who sees us and knows.

Another thing about prayer that blows me away is the fact that some of the greatest blessings in our lives end up being the result of prayers that have been answered in a completely different way than we would ever have expected. God always answers prayer, but not always in the way we desire.

There’s a quote by Oswald Chambers that is tacked to the office wall behind our desktop computer. It reads, “Let us never forget that our prayers are heard, not because we are in earnest, not because we suffer, but because Jesus suffered.” I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read this quote. Oddly, its significance grabbed hold of my heart only recently. Prayer is a gift, but the greater gift is the One to whom we pray, the One who made prayer possible—the One who longs to have a relationship with us and laid down His life in order to make sure He could.

Lastly, and this is going to sound a bit crazy, what we often seek through prayer is an end result, an answer—and rightfully so, sort of. We want a certain outcome. For example, when I was praying for my dad, I wanted God to heal him. But what I didn’t realize and what I am still learning is that God wants us to have more of Himself rather than the answer to our prayers—because He is the answer. Sometimes He will withhold what we think we want in order to give us what we actually need—more of Him.

And so, my prayer life has changed drastically, and continues to do so. Yes, I still pray and talk to God and ask Him for specific outcomes—I talk to Him about everything. But now, it’s really more about getting to know Him rather than getting what I want.
